General description

Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) is a polar aprotic solvent that is generally used as a reaction medium and reagent in organic reactions.

Application

Dimethyl Sulfoxide can be used as:
  • An oxidant for the conversion of isonitriles into isocyanates.
  •  A solvent in polymerase chain reaction.
  • A cryoprotectant for the preservation of cells, tissues and organs.
  • An oxidant in Swern oxidation, that can be activated by oxalyl chloride and used in the oxidation of long-chain alcohols to carbonyls.
  • Solvent/oxidant in the α-hydroxylation of ketones in the presence of NBS/I2 catalyst.
