General description
Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) is a polar aprotic solvent that is generally used as a reaction medium and reagent in organic reactions.
Application
Dimethyl Sulfoxide can be used as:
- An oxidant for the conversion of isonitriles into isocyanates.
- A solvent in polymerase chain reaction.
- A cryoprotectant for the preservation of cells, tissues and organs.
- An oxidant in Swern oxidation, that can be activated by oxalyl chloride and used in the oxidation of long-chain alcohols to carbonyls.
- Solvent/oxidant in the α-hydroxylation of ketones in the presence of NBS/I2 catalyst.
Disclaimer
Supercools easily and remelts slowly at room temperature. Solidified product can be re-liquified by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.

Preservation of cells and tissues at low temperatures requires the presence of effective cryoprotectants with low toxicity to which cells are relatively permeable. Two similar compounds, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2), exhibit both features for cryoprotectants, yet DMSO
