General description
18:0 (9,10dibromo) PC (1,2-di-(9,10-dibromo)stearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) is a zwitterionic and brominated phospholipid.
Application
18:0 (9,10dibromo) PC (1,2-di-(9,10-dibromo)stearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) may be used:
- in the preparation of liposomes/small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs)
- in the preparation of large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) to facilitate vesicles sedimentation
- as a component in liposomes
Biochem/physiol Actions
Phosphatidylcholine (PC) serves as a surfactant to prevent the penetrance of bacteria. Brominated lipids are capable of recognizing the lipid binding sites on the surface of the reaction center from Rhodobacter sphaeroides.

This study describes the use of brominated phospholipids to distinguish between lipid and detergent binding sites on the surface of a typical alpha-helical membrane protein. Reaction centers isolated from Rhodobacter sphaeroides were cocrystallized with added brominated phospholipids. X-ray structural analysis
