General description

16:0 EPC or 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-ethylphosphocholine is a P-O-ethyl derivative and a saturated cationic lipid.

Application

1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-ethylphosphocholine (16:0 EPC (Cl Salt)):
  • has been used to design lipid nanoparticles of lower transition temperature, to enhance intracellular delivery mediated by shock waves
  • is suitable for use as a cationic lipid to examine its miscibility and phase behavior with zwitterionic lipids
  • may be used in liposome preparation

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cationic lipids serve as a DNA and RNA transfecting agent. They behave as co-adjuvants for preparing vaccines and promote drug delivery. Ethyl phosphocholine (EPC) lipids resemble the cellular lipids, hence they are less toxic. They are also found to be metabolized by cells, as a result, they act as a potential non-viral transfection agent.
