General description

12:0 Diether PC (phosphocholine) is a glycerophospholipid having two dodecane chains attached to the sn-1 and sn-2 positions of the glycerol backbone by ether bonds. It has choline as the alcohol moiety, attached to the phosphate group.

Application

12:0 Diether PC or 1,2-di-O-dodecyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine might be used in small micelles for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments to study the interaction of peptide with model membranes.

Biochem/physiol Actions

12:0 Diether PC (phosphocholine) is found to be a simpler membrane model and is highly compatible with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It is useful in bicelles formation. Bicelles can be integrated into standard crystallization protocols and in contrast to micelles, bicelles maintain the protein in a more native bilayer environment allowing proteins to be captured in a more biologically relevant orientation.

The critical micelle concentration (CMC) can be approximately defined as the lipid monomer concentration at which appreciable amounts (>5% of total) of micellar aggregates first begin to appear in the equilibrium: nM1<=>Mn
