General description

A polypeptide antibiotic and a peptidase inhibitor. Active against gram-positive microorganisms. An inhibitor of protein disulfide isomerase. Resembles penicillin in causing protoplast formation and inhibition of cell wall synthesis. Blocks the regeneration of the carrier phospholipid. Stimulates 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors and increases vascular resistance. Bacitracin is unstable in alkaline solutions. Note: Do not use a glass rod for stirring the solution, it may cause some precipitation.
