General description

Polyether antibiotic that functions as a Na+ ionophore by forming stable complexes with monovalent cations that are able to cross the plasma membrane. Blocks glycoprotein secretion. Inhibits the ability of HDL to decrease cellular cholesterol esterification. Also reported to induce catecholamine secretion from adrenal chromaffin cells.
