Gene Information

human ... APOBEC3A(200315)

General description

DNA dC->dU-editing enzyme APOBEC-3A (UniProt: P31941; EC:3.5.4.38; also known as Phorbolin-1, A3A) is encoded by the APOBEC3A gene (Gene ID: 200315) in human. APOBEC3A is a member of the APOBEC family of cytidine deaminases, that catalyze the deamination of cytidine to uridine in single-stranded DNA. APOBEC3A is characterized by a single cytidine deaminase domain. APOBEC3A plays a role in innate immunity by restricting the replication of various viruses and retroelements, by introducing mutations into single stranded DNA and RNA. It can also induce mutations in host DNA. APOBEC3A is implicated in cancer development due to its ability to introduce mutations in genomic DNA, contributing to mutational signatures observed in several cancer types, including breast cancer. Its mutagenic activity is associated with genomic instability, which can lead to tumorigenesis. (Ref: Dananberg, A. and Maciejowski, J., (2024), Methods Cell Biol. 182; 313 327)
