Application

Acetylated to inactivate nucleases commonly found in BSA. Acetylated BSA should not be used as a protein standard since acetylation of tyrosine residues prevents color development in the Lowry assay and other similar protein determinations.
Albumin from bovine serum has been used for electron and immunoelectron microscopy. It has also been used for isolating and culturing neonatal rat cardiac ventricular myocytes.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Bovine serum albumin also referred to as BSA or Fraction V is a protein isolated from cows. BSA can block vacant binding sites in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in both poly-l-lysine (PLL)-treated and non-treated microwells. It can also trigger insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in humans.

Preparation Note

Albumin from bovine serum is slightly soluble in water.
from BSA by acetylation in order to inactivate nucleases.

Other Notes

In the preparation of a bromouridine conjugate in EIA using a monoclonal antibody against 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine for the assessment of lymphoid cell proliferation
