General description

3,3′,5,5′-Tetrabromobisphenol A is a brominated derivative of bisphenol A commonly used as a flame retardant. It finds applications in a variety of consumer products ranging from fabrics to plastics and electronics. Its removal from the aquatic environment using the environmental-friendly chitosan (CS)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibrous membranes is reported.
This compound is listed in the SVHC (Substances of very high concern) candidate list of ECHA (European Chemicals Agency)

Application

3,3′,5,5′-Tetrabromobisphenol A may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in air samples and sediment/sludge samples using chromatography techniques.

The thyroid hormone-disrupting activity of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a flame retardant, and related compounds was examined. TBBPA, tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA), tetramethylbisphenol A (TMBPA) and 3,3'-dimethylbisphenol A (DMBPA) markedly inhibited the binding of triiodothyronine (T3; 1 x 10(-10) M) to thyroid
