General description

Dithizone (Diphenylthiocarbazone) is used as chelating agent for zinc. It is widely used for the liquid-liquid and solid phase extraction of various metals since it forms stable complexes with the metals.

Application

Dithizone (Diphenylthiocarbazone) may be used for the in vitro characterization of differentiated pancreatic islets clusters in differentiated embryonic stem cell cultures, as it forms chelates with zinc present in huge quantities in pancreatic islets, thereby selectively staining them. It may be used to form complex with silver ions in the cloud point preconcentration step before the trace level quantification of silver by flame atomic absorption spectrometry.
