General description

β-Sitosterol is an abundantly found phytosterol in plants. It is known to show anti-inflammatory, immune-modulating, antipyretic, antineoplastic, and blood sugar-controlling properties. β-Sitosterol also acts as an estrogen and estrogen receptor (ERα and Erβ) agonist.

Application

This analytical standard can also be used as follows:
  • Identification and determination of β-sitosterol and stigmasterol in the hydro-alcohol extract, prepared from the leaves of B. bambo by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) coupled to photo-diode array detector (PDA)
  • Development and validation of two high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) methods to quantify four biomarkers— β-sitosterol, β-amyrin, lupeol, and ursolic acid in the ethanol extract of G. senegalensis leaves
  • Secondary metabolite profiling of various plant parts collected from 82 plants belonging to 21 different cannabis strains using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for sterols and terpenoids (mono-, sesqui-, tri-), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV and mass spectrometric (MS) detection for flavonoids
  • High-performance thin layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method-based quantification of β-sitosterol in a herbal formulation prepared from the roots of Gmelina arborea using silica gel precoated 60 F254 aluminum plates
  • Determination of free sterols or oxysterols in food matrices, using gas chromatography and ion trap mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
