General description
Sodium acetate trihydrate can be obtained from the crystallization of sodium acetate in water. It loses water of crystallization on heating at 75°C, while on heating above 120°C, anhydrous sodium acetate is obtained. Its aqueous solutions are basic in nature. ESR spectra of its irradiated single crystals have been studied at 77°K. The hyperfine proton and 13C splittings indicated the presence of trapped methyl radicals. Its crystal structure has been examined.
Application
Sodium acetate trihydrate may be used in the preparation of silicone/sodium acetate trihydrate hybrid.
Other Notes
Enzyme substrate for acetate kinase (EC 2.7.2.1)
