Lactulose is therapeutically used in hepatic encephalopathy, constipation, and salmonellosis. This semisynthetic disaccharide is neither metabolized nor absorbed in the normal small intestines. Comparable to plant-polysaccharides lactulose is bacterially fermented in the colon to short chain fatty acids and gases.
