General description

Mercury (quicksilver) is a rare chemical element found most commonly in cinnabar (HgS). It is widely employed in the production of industrial chemicals like mercuric (I) and mercuric (II) compounds, because of two oxidation states (+1 and +2). Additionally, it is also used in the synthesis of coordination complexes of mercury as well as organomercury compounds. Mercury(II) salts are used in the preparation of industrially important chemical reagents such as Millon′s base, Nessler′s reagent (potassium tetraiodomercurate), one-dimensional polymer (salts of HgNH2+)n), etc.
