Application

D-(+)-Galactose (D-Gal) is a component with glucose of the disaccharide lactose. Galactose may be used in studies on galactose metabolism as the substrate for indentificaiton, differentiation and characterization of enzymes such as galactose oxidase(s) (GO), galactose permease(s), galactose kinase(s), and galactose phosphorylase(s). D-Gal is used in the study of Maillard glycation and its consequences in vivo.

Transformation of mouse-spleen lymphocytes in the presence of soybean agglutinin is markedly enhanced after their treatment with neuraminidase (EC 3.2.1.18). Incubation of the cells with the enzyme also facilitates their agglutination by the lectin. The soybean agglutinin-induced agglutination and transformation
