Application

Alkaline phosphatase is used in the laboratory to remove phosphate monoesters which prevents self-ligation. It is also used in the dairy industry to confirm pasturization of milk. Alkaline phosphatse is commonly conjugated to antibodies and used in immunoblotting, ELISA′s, and other antibody based detection assays.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Alkaline phosphatase is a hydrolytic enzyme which dephosphorylates a variety of molecules under basic conditions.

Physical form

solution in 3 M NaCl, 1 mM MgCl2, 0.1 mM ZnCl2, 30 mM triethanolamine, pH 7.6

Other Notes

1 U corresponds to the amount of enzyme which hydrolyzes 1 μmol 4-nitrophenyl phosphate per minute at pH 9.8 and 37°C
