Biochem/physiol Actions
The gene for azurocidin is located on the short arm of chromosome 19 and is in a cluster with the genes for proteinase 3 and elastase. All three proteins are serine protease homologues. Azurocidin was long believed to lack enzymatic activity, but it appears now to act on insulin-like growth factor binding protein. This may be its mode of action as a multifunctional inflammatory mediator.

Azurocidin is an important inflammatory mediator and considered to be an inactive serine protease homologue. It has previously been reported that azurocidin is a possible IGFBP-1 specific protease; however, the protease-activity of azurocidin was not isolated in its active form.
