Biochem/physiol Actions
ERG (ETS-related gene) is an oncogene encoding for a protein that is mutated in cancer. It belongs to the Ets family of transcription factors and is critically important for maintenance of hematopoietic stem cell population. Majority of human prostate cancers is caused due to overexpression of ERG. ERG overexpression is found among intermediate and high-risk tumors. ERG expression has potential to act as biomarkers and therapeutic targets for prostate tumors. It is also useful in inhibiting cell differentiation and activating cell growth.
