General description
Growth hormone releasing factor (GHRF) is a hypothalamus-secreted peptide composed of 40-44 amino acids. This protein is expressed by organs such as, ovaries, testis and placenta, and cells such as, lymphocytes.
Application
Growth hormone releasing factor (GHRF) procine has been used for GHRH challenge test in pigs, 48hrs post- intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT).
Biochem/physiol Actions
Growth hormone releasing factor (GHRF) binds to GHRF receptors in the anterior pituitary, leading to the production and release of GH (growth hormone). GH induces the production of the mitogen insulin-like growth factor-I in the liver. In peripheral organs and cancer, GHRF has a paracrine/autocrine function. It is abnormally expressed in gynecological tumors, pancreatic, lung and prostate cancer. This protein might be responsible for pathogenesis of endometrioid type of endometrial cancers. It is essential for the amplification of GH secretion during night time.
