Biochem/physiol Actions
Interleukin-21 (IL-21) is a protein encoded by the IL21 gene in humans. It is a cytokine that has potent regulatory effects on cells of the immune system, including natural killer (NK) cells and cytotoxic T cells. Cytokines are crutial for the regulation of haematopoiesis and immune responses. It can influence lymphocyte development. IL21 has an important role in the proliferation and maturation of natural killer (NK) cell populations from bone marrow. The gene may play a role in the development of Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). IL-21 is essential for B cell activation, expansion and PC differentiation induced by direct interaction of B cells with activated T cells. Polymorphisms of this gene is associated with several cancers.

Polymorphisms in Interleukin (IL)-21 have been researched in several cancers, but the association between IL-21 polymorphisms and thyroid cancer remains unclarified. This case-control study explored the role of five tagSNPs (rs12508721C>T, rs907715G>A, rs13143866G>A, rs2221903A>G and rs4833837A>G) in IL-21 gene in

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is one of the common autoimmune diseases, with complex genetic components. Interleukin-21 (IL-21) is the most recently discovered member of the type-I cytokine family, which has a variety of effects on the immune system, including B

During T cell-B cell collaboration, plasma cell (PC) differentiation and Ig production are known to require T cell-derived soluble factors. However, the exact nature of the cytokines produced by activated T cells that costimulate PC differentiation is not clear. Previously
