Biochem/physiol Actions

Bcl-2-like protein 1 is a protein encoded by the BCL2L1 gene in humans. The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family and is tightly regulated. It is capable of switching the apoptotic machinery by directly controlling the release of apoptotic factors from the mitochondrial outer membrane. BCL2L1 regulates the mitochondrial phase of apoptotic cell death. Proapoptotic Bcl-2 protein Bax is capable of committing a cell to apoptosis by translocation from the cytosol to the mitochondria and permeabilization of the outer mitochondrial membrane. It is inviolved in controlling Bax activity.
