Regulator of G-protein signalling 9 is a human gene encoding for a protein that is involved in regulation of signal transduction inside cells. The protein belongs to RGS family of GTPase accelerating proteins. It is expressed specifically in the striatum, a brain region involved in controlling movement, motivation, mood and addiction. RGS9-1 regulates phototransduction in rods and cones and RGS9-2 regulates dopamine and opioid signaling in the basal ganglia. RGS9 plays an essential role at intracellular compartment and its functioning.
