MAPK15 (mitogen-activated protein kinase 15) is an atypical member of MAPK family with a conserved PCNA-interacting protein (PIP) box and the PXXXP (proline rich) motif in carboxyl terminal end. It exhibits high kinase activity. It is localized at the Golgi complex. It possesses an atypically long C-terminal domain for auto-phosphorylation of its Thr-X-Tyr motif.

MAPK15 (mitogen-activated protein kinase 15) is involved in the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) protein stability. It is a major regulator of PCNA complex formation in mammary epithelial cells. In association with homologue of murine double minute (HDM2), it prevents the loss of PCNA during DNA damage and mitotic failure. It plays a role in the DNA repair of single strand breaks through a proteasome-dependent mechanism. In the Golgi complex it inhibits COP-I vesicle formation, which is essential for the formation of transport carriers. It also restrict the export of GalNAc-Ts (GaINAc (N-acetylgalactosamine)-transferases).
