Gene Information

General description
The gene IgD (immunoglobulin heavy constant δ) encodes the major antigen receptor isotype that is expressed on the surface of B lymphocytes along with IgM. There are two forms of IgD, the membrane-bound form and the form secreted in to the serum. The serum IgD constitutes only 0.2% of all immunoglobulins. The δ heavy chain of IgD contains a four-domain structure comprising of a variable region (VH), and three constant region domains named Cδ1, Cδ2, Cδ3. The C region also contains an unusual hinge region of approximately 64 residues. The N-terminal end is referred to as GalN-rich segment. The C-terminal end is rich in glutamic acid and lysine and is referred to as high-charge segment.

Biochem/physiol Actions
IgD (immunoglobulin heavy constant δ) is a class of immunoglobulin that may function in facilitating antibody secretion and participating in early antibody secretion. The serum IgD level may vary from undetectable to 140mg/L. Increased levels of serum IgD has been observed in clinical conditions, such as IgD myeloma, Hodgkin′s disease, sarcoidosis and tuberculosis, aspergillosis, ataxia-telangiectasia, AIDS, hyperimmunoglobulinemia D and periodic fever (HIDS) syndrome. IgD induces inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF (tumor necrosis factor)-α, IL-1β (interleukin 1β), IL-6 and may regulate several interactions and processes related to inflammation and immune response. It may also participate in the pathogenesis of HIDS.
Recognizes the delta chain of human IgD and is not reactive with heavy chains from human IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4, IgM, IgA, or kappa and lambda light chains.
Physical form
Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 1% bovine serum albumin and 15 mM sodium azide
Other Notes
IgD is expressed on peripheral B cells and is used as a pan-B cell marker.

The molecules of the TNF superfamily and their receptors play crucial roles in the humoral immune response. In view of the powerful effects on germinal center (GC) B cell differentiation, the expression of these molecules should be tightly regulated. In

Immunoglobulin D (IgD) is normally present in only low concentrations in serum. In the hyper-IgD and periodic fever syndrome (HIDS), however, serum levels exceed 140 mg/l. This syndrome is further characterized by recurrent inflammatory febrile attacks together with an acute
