Methyl cellulose is a water-soluble, non-ionic polymer with hydrophilic glucosidic bonds, derived from the polysaccharide cellulose.
Application
Methyl cellulose has been used:
- in colony forming assays
- for sperm motility assessment
- for the generation of spheroids
- in preparation of agar beads
Biochem/physiol Actions
Methyl cellulose mediates stabilization of oil, water and air mixtures, like foam, by emulsification. Methyl cellulose is used as a binder and thickener for various adhesives. It is also used as a treatment of constipation.
