Biochem/physiol Actions
Sesn1 (sestrin 1) is known to be a protein involved in sensing stress. It promotes the AMPK (5′ AMP-activated protein kinase) activation. Sesn1 inhibits mTORC1 (mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1) signaling, thereby contributing to anti-ageing mechanism. Sestrins protein family possesses oxidoreductase activity. Sestrins are believed to promote antioxidative responses to stress, as they are transcripted by p53 (tumor protein) and FoxO (Forkhead box). Thus, they can serve as a potential therapeutic target.
