General description
This gene encodes a cytokine member of the cysteine knot superfamily, characterized by nine conserved cysteines and a cysteine knot region. The cerberus-related cytokines, together with Dan and DRM/Gremlin, represent a group of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) antagonists that can bind directly to BMPs and inhibit their activity. (provided by RefSeq)

CER1 (AAH69491.1, 1 a.a. ~ 267 a.a) full-length human protein.

Biochem/physiol Actions
Cerberus 1 (CER1) is associated with the regulation of various pathways including nodal, Wnt, or BMP signaling pathways. During bone development, it acts as an inhibitor of BMPs (bone morphogenetic proteins). Polymorphisms in CER1 has link with osteoporosis, on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone markers in osteoporotic women. It has been reported that CER1 has been identified as a potential marker for bone mineral density and bone markers in osteoporotic women.
