Gene Information

human ... VGF(7425)

General description

Anti-VGF Antibody detects endogenous levels of total VGF protein.
The VGF (VGF nerve growth factor inducible) gene is mapped to human chromosome 7q22.1 and codes for a neuropeptide, highly expressed in brain.

Immunogen

The antiserum was produced against synthesized peptide derived from human VGF.

Immunogen Range: 454-503

Biochem/physiol Actions

VGF (VGF nerve growth factor inducible) when induced by neurotrophins such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, is believed to enhance neuron formation in hippocampus. The gene has an influence on a number of biological processes through its proteolytically digested peptide. Processes include metabolic homeostasis, memory, pain, circadian rhythm, regulation of arginine vasopressin secretion, neurodegeneration and neuropsychiatric disorders. Downregulation of the gene was observed in depression and human bipolar disorder. The encoded growth factor has neuroprotective action on impaired neurons in order to support cell survival.
