Gene Information
human ... EEF2(1938)
General description
Eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF2) is a cytoplasmic protein encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 19.
Immunogen
The antiserum was produced against synthesized peptide derived from human eEF2 around the phosphorylation site of Thr56.
Immunogen Range: 31-80
Immunogen Range: 31-80
Biochem/physiol Actions
Eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF2) plays a vital role in the elongation of polypeptide chain via catalyzing the translocation of the two tRNAs and the mRNA after peptidyl transfer on the 80S ribosome. eEF2 is highly expressed in various human cancers such as lung, esophageal, pancreatic, breast and prostate cancers, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), glioblastoma multiforme and non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL). eEF2 is used as a potential marker for the diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). eEF2 activity is inhibited by the eukaryotic elongation factor-2 kinase (eEF2K), which is essential for the transmission of growth and stress signals to protein synthesis. eEF2 functions as a biochemical sensor in neuronal dendrites that links miniature synaptic events to local translational inactivation. eEF2 is also involved in nuclear deformation and aneuploidy.

Activity-dependent regulation of dendritic protein synthesis is critical for enduring changes in synaptic function, but how the unique features of distinct activity patterns are decoded by the dendritic translation machinery remains poorly understood. Here, we identify eukaryotic elongation factor-2 (eEF2)
