General description
Gastrodin, a phenolic glucoside, is the main active ingredient of the Traditional Chinese medicinal compound Tianma. Gastrodin can penetrate through the blood-brain barrier and has been suggested to have neuroprotective effects against hypoxia. It is also known to reduce the immunoreactivity of γ-aminobutyric acid shunt enzymes in hippocampal tissues.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Gastrodin is a key bioactive component. The study shows that its clinical application is widely distributed in the treatment of neurasthenia, dizziness, epilepsy, migraine, headache and dementia. Its pharmacological impacts has also been reported in cardiovascular diseases and neointima formation.
