General description
Poliothyrsoside, also known as Nigracin, is a phenolic glycoside compound commonly found in plants such as Flacourtia indica, Loxocalyx urticifolius, Hydnocarpus annamensis, Xylosma flexuosa, Poliothyrsis sinensis, and Scolopia spinosa. Existing research suggests that this plant-derived metabolite exerts various biological activities, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-alzheimers and antiplasmodial properties.
Application
It is a natural product derived from plant source that finds application in compound screening libraries, metabolomics, phytochemical and biochemical research.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Poliothyrsoside is a pyruvic transaminase inhibitor known for its insulin-sensitizing effects in cell culture. Additionally, it exhibits anti-diabetic properties by inhibiting acetyl-CoA carboxylase, ultimately enhancing insulin sensitivity and lowering blood glucose levels in diabetic mice. This compound also serves as a lactate dehydrogenase inhibitor and demonstrates antidepressant-like actions, along with effectiveness against Alzheimer′s disease. In vitro studies have further revealed Poliothyrsoside′s capacity to inhibit virus production and exhibit antiviral activity against HIV-1.
