Application

Tiotropium bromide monohydrate may be used as a long-acting muscarinic receptor antagonist (LAMA) in a comparative study to explore its efficacy in the downregulation of the cough reflex in rabbits.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Tiotropium Bromide is an anticholinergic bronchodilator. It is considered a long-acting muscarinic receptor antagonist (LAMA) and is used clinically as an inhaled bronchodilator for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.
Tiotropium bromide exhibits more beneficial effects on pulmonary function than other anticholinergic and β-2 adrenergic agents. Tiotropium can prevent the proliferation of fibroblasts and myofibroblasts induced by acetylcholine. It can block human monocyte chemotaxis.

Parasympathetic neurons utilize the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to modulate and constrict airway smooth muscles at the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. Inhaled agents that antagonize the muscarinic (M) acetylcholine receptor, particularly airway M3 receptors, have increasing data supporting use in persistent asthma. Areas
