General description
KAT4 is a DNA-binding protein complex required for RNA polymerase II-mediated transcription of many, if not all, protein-encoding genes in eukaryotic cells. KAT4 plays a key role in the initiation process, since it binds to the TATA element to form a complex that nucleates the assembly of the other components into a preinitiation complex and that may be stable through multiple rounds of transcription. KAT4 may be targeted to specific chromatin-bound promoters and may play a key role in chromatin recognition. KAT4 also serves to link the control of transcription to the cell cycle.
