Gene Information

human ... PPM1A(5494)

General description

Protein phosphatase 2C-α (PP2C-α), also referred to as protein phosphatase, Mg2+/Mn2+ dependent 1A (PPM1A), is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 4q12. The encoded protein belongs to the family of Ser/Thr protein phosphatases. It is characterized with a catalytic subunit and a constant regulatory subunit. PP2C-α is abundantly expressed in heart and skeletal muscle.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Protein phosphatase 2C-α (PP2C-α) is known to be a negative regulator of cell stress response pathways. Additionally, it has been reported to negatively regulate transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling pathway and cell cycle. PP2C-α has been shown to dephosphorylate cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) and it may be involved in cell cycle control. It modulates cell migration and invasion.
