Application
Tomatine has been used as a standard for HPLC-based determination of tomatine from red and green tomatoes1. It has also been used to study its teratogenic effect using frog embryos2.
Biochem/physiol Actions
When the pure compounds were isolated, alpha-Tomatine was highly effective in inhibiting all of the cell lines, whereas dehydrotomatine, tomatidenol, and tomatidine had little, if any, effect on cell inhibition. It had been previously shown that commercial tomatine, which is customarily an approximate 10:1 mixture of α-tomatine and dehydrotomatine, strongly inhibits the growth of both colon and liver cancer cells.

Preparation Note
Tomatine hydrate is soluble in DMSO at a concentration that is greater than 20 mg/ml.
