Application

Tomatine has been used as a standard for HPLC-based determination of tomatine from red and green tomatoes1. It has also been used to study its teratogenic effect using frog embryos2.

Biochem/physiol Actions

When the pure compounds were isolated, alpha-Tomatine was highly effective in inhibiting all of the cell lines, whereas dehydrotomatine, tomatidenol, and tomatidine had little, if any, effect on cell inhibition. It had been previously shown that commercial tomatine, which is customarily an approximate 10:1 mixture of α-tomatine and dehydrotomatine, strongly inhibits the growth of both colon and liver cancer cells.

α-Tomatine, isolated from Lycopersicon esculentum Linn., is a naturally occurring steroidal glycoalkaloid in immature green tomatoes. Some reports demonstrated that α-tomatine had various anticarcinogenic properties. The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-metastatic effect of α-tomatine in NCI-H460

Steroidal alkaloids (SAs) are triterpene-derived specialized metabolites found in members of the Solanaceae family that provide plants with a chemical barrier against a broad range of pathogens. Their biosynthesis involves the action of glycosyltransferases to form steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs). To
