Biochem/physiol Actions
Thrombospondin is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein that is expressed in platelets, vascular smooth muscle cells and mesangial cells. It is a platelet aggregating factor and participates in clot formation. It inhibits angiogenesis directly by inhibiting endothelial cell migration and survival. It regulates cellular differentiation during tissue remodeling via activation of transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß).
