General description

D-biotin is water soluble vitamin, which belongs to the B-complex group of vitamins. It generally serves as a covalently-bound coenzyme for several carboxylases. It is an essential micronutrient required for normal cell functions and can be obtained both dietary sources as well as gut microbiota.

Application

D-Biotin may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in food samples using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)/avidin-binding assay.

  1. Which document(s) contains shelf-life or expiration date information for a given product?

If available for a given product, the recommended re-test date or the expiration date can be found on the Certificate of Analysis.

  2. How do I get lot-specific information or a Certificate of Analysis?

The lot specific COA document can be found by entering the lot number above under the "Documents" section.

  3. Is Product 47868, D-Biotin, suitable for cell culture?

Product 47868 D-Biotin, is not cell culture tested, and you should not consider it for cell culture use.  The Supelco biotin is a chemical standard to be used in chromatographic methods. For cell culture, consider either the animal cell culture tested biotin (Product No. B4639), or the plant cell culture tested biotin (Product No. B3399).

  4. How do I solubilize Product 47868, D-Biotin?

Per the chemicals encyclopedia published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, 13th ed, biotin is readily soluble in hot water or dilute alkali; it is insoluble in other common organic solvents.  In our labs, the basic solutions may be Trizma base, 2M ammonium hydroxide, or 1N sodium hydroxide.  You can put the biotin into water, and titrate it with base until it goes into solution.

  5. What column do you recommend for the analysis of water soluble vitamins, including Biotin?

The Discovery C18 and Ascentis RP-Amide HPLC columns have been used for the separation of ten water soluble vitamins: Ascorbic acid, Biotin, Cyanocobalamin, Folic acid, Niacin, Niacinamide, Pantothenic acid, Pyridoxine, Riboflavin, and Thiamine.
