General description
This is the 15N isotope-labelled analog of saxitoxin. Saxitoxin is a highly potent neurotoxin in the paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) family, produced by marine dinoflagellates and some freshwater cyanobacteria, that can accumulate in bivalves and cause paralytic shellfish poisoning in humans. Testing is critical for seafood safety and regulatory compliance, and modern monitoring programs increasingly rely on LC–MS/MS and related chemistry-based methods to quantify saxitoxin and its many analogues in shellfish and water. A stable isotope–labeled internal standard enables isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS), which corrects for matrix effects and recovery losses, yielding high‑accuracy, low‑uncertainty results. Because the labeled standard co-elutes and ionizes like the native toxin, quantification based on isotope ratios improves method robustness and inter-laboratory comparability.
