Acute organophosphate poisoning leads to a cholinergic crisis secondary to an acetylcholine rise, developed by an acetylcholinesterase inhibition. In some cases, after the resolution of the initial cholinergic signs and symptoms, an intermediate syndrome occurs, characterized by a delayed development

Human poisoning by organophosphates bearing two methoxy groups, e.g. by malathion, paraoxon-methyl, dimethoate and oxydemeton-methyl, is generally considered to be rather resistant to oxime therapy. Since the oxime effectiveness is influenced not only by its reactivating potential but also by

A case of a combined suicide by oxydemeton-methyl (Metasystox) ingestion and hanging is reported. Dimethyl phosphate (DMP) proved to be a stable product of oxydemeton-methyl; for its determination a gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric procedure was performed. DMP levels were quantified in

S-hyoscyamine (S-hyo) is a toxic tropane alkaloid from plants of the solanacea family, which is extracted for pharmaceutical purposes thereby undergoing racemization (atropine). Merely the S-hyo enantiomer acts as an antagonist of muscarinic receptors (MR). Nevertheless, racemic atropine is clinically
