生化/生理作用

中枢神经系统兴奋剂，被认为通过腺苷受体和单胺类神经递质发挥作用。可作为腺苷受体拮抗剂和腺苷3′,5′-环单磷酸(cAMP)磷酸二酯酶抑制剂。因此，在用咖啡因处理后，细胞内cAMP的水平将升高。据报道，它会影响细胞钙水平，使细胞内的钙离子外流。它会使多种化学物质（例如蛋白酶抑制剂）的细胞周期效应无效，从而防止细胞凋亡；同时，还发现它可以抑制细胞的DNA修复机制。
