General description

Icariin is a major flavonoid isolated from Epimedium spp. leaves, used as a traditional Chinese medicine to nourish the kidney and reinforce yang.

Application

Icariin has been used as a test material to investigate its, in vitro effect in promoting mouse hair follicle growth, which is assessed by vibrissae hair follicle (VHF) organ-culture model.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Flavonoid glucoside derived from the the Epimedium plant genus. This pharmacologically active constituent or its derivatives have been shown to enhance bone formation, modulate multidrug resistance, enhance neuronal viability, stimulate angiogenesis, and exhibit antioxidant activity.
