Gene Information

General description
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the platelet-derived growth factor/vascular endothelial growth factor (PDGF/VEGF) family, is active in angiogenesis and endothelial cell growth, and can also affect the permeability of blood vessels. This secreted protein undergoes a complex proteolytic maturation, generating multiple processed forms which bind and activate VEGFR-3 receptors. Only the fully processed form can bind and activate VEGFR-2 receptors. This protein is structurally and functionally similar to vascular endothelial growth factor D. (provided by RefSeq)
The vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) gene with seven exons is mapped to human chromosome 4q34.3. It is a member of the VEGF family of structurally related proteins. Members of the family contain a common VEGF homology domain. This domain forms the core region and contains a cystine knot motif with eight invariant cysteine residues. In adults, VEGF-C is mainly expressed in heart, placenta, ovary, small intestine and the thyroid gland, whereas in embryonic tissue, it is expressed in the perimetanephric, axillary and jugular areas.

Biochem/physiol Actions
VEGF-C (vascular endothelial growth factor-C) has a role in lymphangiogenesis. It functions through the VEGF receptor-3 (VEGFR-3). Experimental studies have shown that VEGF-C is required for lymphatic endothelial cells to form sprouting capillaries. VEGF-C expression has been observed in breast cancer, prostatic cancer, gastric cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer.
