The Packaging Sustainability Improvement Toolkit helps you to create an action plan and consider the entire lifecycle of packaging, including the source of materials and its end-of-life.

Section Overview

Steps to Implementation

1. Get Started

Develop a comprehensive plan by evaluating your packaging data and setting goals aligned with industry standards.

2. Take Action

Implement your strategy by focusing on weight reduction, zero-deforestation, and circular design principles.

3. Measure Progress

Track and report on your packaging improvements by leveraging LCA tools.

Case Studies

Zero-Deforestation Initiatives

Deforestation is a source of global warming and is a threat to biodiversity. Our aim is to ensure that the wood and fiber-based packaging materials that we use do not contribute to deforestation. So far, 72.9% of all fiber packaging aligns with our zero deforestation standards a 10% increase from 2019.

Smaller shipping box with reduced air space and packaging materials, part of Milwaukee's Packaging for Smalls project

    Packaging For Smalls

A smaller box was developed and validated for shipping around 1,000 products daily at our Milwaukee distribution center. The new solution has an air space reduction of over 50%– a reduction of 60 metric tons of packaging materials annually. We are further developing this initiative by implementing other Packaging for Smalls projects at sites across the organization.

Milli-Q® system protected by bio-based polyethylene foam, reducing fossil use and CO2 emissions.

      Milli-Q® Protective Foam

Recent Milli-Q® systems were protected by conventional petroleum-based polyethylene foam. The new foam protectors are now made from bio-based polyethylene that stems from a coproduct of sugar production and reduced the usage of fossil-based sources. This reduces the usage of fossil-based polyethylene foam by 4 tons annually and reduces CO2 emissions by 8.8 tons of CO2e annually.
