General description
Cytochrome P450 2J2 (EC 1.14.14.1; UniProt P51589; also known as Arachidonic acid epoxygenase, CYPIIJ2, Cytochrome P450 subfamily IIJ polypeptide 2, Flavoprotein-linked monooxygenase, Microsomal monooxygenase) is encoded by the CYP2J2 (also known as CPJ2) gene (Gene ID 1573) in human. Cytochromes P450 (CYP) proteins are primarily membrane-associated oxidases located either in the inner membrane of mitochondria or in the endoplasmic reticulum where they function as the terminal enzymes in electron transfer chains. In addition to processing endogenous substrates, CYPs also function to metabolize exogenous drugs and potentially toxic chemicals. The human CYP superfamily consisits of 57 genes and more than 59 pseudogenes divided into 18 families and 43 subfamilies. The CYP2J subfamily of enzymes are responsible for the epoxidation of endogenous arachidonic acid (AA) into epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) and 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE).
~50 kDa observed.

R/S enantiomers of 11-hydroxyeicosatertraenoic acid (11-HETE) are formed from arachidonic acid by enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways. 11-HETE is predominately formed by the cytochrome P450 1B1 (CYP1B1). The role of CYP1B1 in the development of cardiovascular diseases is well established. This
