General description

α/β hydrolase domain containing 12 (ABHD12) is a member of serine esterase family, with molecular mass of ~45kDa. The gene coding for this glycoprotein is mapped to human chromosome 20p11. The protein is mainly expressed in the brain, as well as at high levels in microglia.

Application

The Human Protein Atlas project can be subdivided into three efforts: Human Tissue Atlas, Cancer Atlas, and Human Cell Atlas. The antibodies that have been generated in support of the Tissue and Cancer Atlas projects have been tested by immunohistochemistry against hundreds of normal and disease tissues and through the recent efforts of the Human Cell Atlas project, many have been characterized by immunofluorescence to map the human proteome not only at the tissue level but now at the subcellular level. Biochem/physiol Actions

α/β hydrolase domain containing 12 (ABHD12) hydrolyzes the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) into arachidonic acid and glycerol. The protein plays a crucial role in central and peripheral nervous systems and the eye. Mutations in the ABHD12-gene cause polyneuropathy, hearing loss, ataxia, retinitis pigmentosa and cataract (PHARC syndrome). ABHD16A-ABHD12 interaction modulates lysophosphatidylserines (lyso-PSs) metabolism invivo, therefore these enzymes can act as a potential target for treating neuroimmunological disorders.
