Biochem/physiol Actions

p38 MAP kinase (RK, SAPK2a, Mxi2, CSBP) is an enzyme that belongs to the MAP kinase family of proteins which are activated by dual phosphorylation on tyrosine and serine residues. p38 MAP kinase is homologous to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae HOG1 protein and represents a signal transduction pathway distinct from the ERK1/ERK2 pathway and JNK pathways. Activation of p38 MAP kinase occurs in response to heat shock, osmotic stress, UV irradiation and exposure to sodium arsenite or lipopolysaccharides. p38 MAP kinase is activated by the dual specificity kinases, i.e. MKK3, MKK4 or MKK6, and subsequently phosphorylates downstream substrates such as the transcription factor ATF2 and the protein kinases MAPKAP kinase-2 and MAPKAP kinase-3.
