General description
Lasalocid A Sodium Salt is an antibiotic which belongs to the class of compounds called ionophores which can transport ions across cell membranes. Lasalocid A Sodium Salt acts as an ionophore for monovalent cations across the cell membranes of bacteria and protozoa.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Lasalocid A Sodium Salt disrupts the balance and energy metabolism in certain bacteria and protozoa. As an ionophore for monovalent cations, Lasalocid A Sodium Salt acts by binding to and transporting these ions across the cell membranes of bacteria and protozoa. This leads to the disruption of the ion balance across the cell membranes, which is essential for the normal functioning of cellular processes, including energy metabolism. Disruption of energy metabolism ultimately leads to the inhibition of essential cellular processes and bacterial or protozoal cell death. The selective toxicity of Lasalocid A Sodium Salt against certain bacteria and protozoa is due to the specific properties of their cell membranes, which are different from those of mammalian cells.
