General description
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a cytotoxic protein. Recombinant murine TRAIL is a 174 amino acid polypeptide (20.0kDa), consisting of the TNF homologous portion of the extracellular domain of the full length TRAIL protein.

Physical form
Lyophilized from 10 mM Sodium Phosphate, pH 7.0.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) activates rapid apoptosis in tumor cells, but not in normal cells. TRAIL-induced apoptosis is achieved through binding to two death-signaling receptors, death receptor 4 and 5 (DR4 and 5). These receptors belong to the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily of transmembrane proteins and contain a cytoplasmic "death domain", which activates the cell′s apoptotic machinery.
Preparation Note
Centrifuge the vial prior to opening. Reconstitute in water to a concentration of 0.5-1.0 mg/ml. Do not vortex. This solution can be stored at 2-8°C for up to 1 week. For extended storage, it is recommended to further dilute in a buffer containing a carrier protein (example 0.1% BSA) and store in working aliquots at -20°C to -80°C.

Apo2 ligand (Apo2L, also called TRAIL) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) cytokine family. The closest homolog of Apo2L is CD95 (Fas/Apo1) ligand, to which it has 24% amino acid sequence identity. Similar to CD95L, Apo2L activates
Death receptor 5, a new member of the TNFR family, and DR4 induce FADD-dependent apoptosis and activate the NF-kappaB pathway.

TRAIL, also called Apo2L, is a cytotoxic protein that induces apoptosis of many transformed cell lines but not of normal tissues, even though its death domain-containing receptor, DR4, is expressed on both cell types. An antagonist decoy receptor (designated as
