Application

α-Bungarotoxin associates with acetylcholine receptors in the postsynaptic membrane and has been used with secondary antibodies to detect motor endplates in rat cells. The toxin has also been used for detecting the presence of muscular nicotinic receptors in Vena cephalica of Sepia officinalis.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Fluorescent label for nicotinic receptors on the motor endplate.

Preparation Note

α-Bungarotoxin is soluble in phosphate buffered saline at 0.1 mg/ml and yields a clear, yellow-orange solution.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cells express cholinergic nicotinic receptors on their membranes, and the stimulatory effect on cell growth of nicotine has been described in cell cultures. We investigated three SCLC cell lines, all showing high levels of fluorescence

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) were identified in a subpopulation of cultured adult rat trigeminal ganglia (TG) neurons by whole-cell patch-clamp recordings. Dimethylphenylpiperazinium (DMPP), a nAChR agonist, induced inward currents in 21/68 of TG neurons having soma diameters greater than 28

Aging is associated with a decline in skeletal muscle function. Previous research suggests that this decline in skeletal muscle function may, in part, be explained by an age-associated decline in the ability of skeletal muscle to reinnervate and/or age-associated changes

Fluorescein-labeled alpha-bungarotoxin (alphaBT/FITC) was used to identify neurons bearing acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system of the pteropod mollusk Clione limacina. AlphaBT/FITC stained two small symmetrical neurons on the dorsal surface of the cerebral ganglia. The stain was highly
