General description
Glycerol (name derived from Greek word glykys), a viscous liquid found in nature, can also be obtained from petrochemical raw materials. It is sweet in taste and commonly known as glycerine. The three hydroxyl groups are responsible for its solubility in water. It is used in the preparation of resins, emulsifiers, plasticizers, and stabilizers. It is also used as a solvent in many organic reactions.
